This is a nice display item for collectors of memorabilia relating to the legal profession or perhaps as a stage prop etc.
It is a top-quality traditional style horsehair wig contained within its vintage black and gold enamel wig box - made by Ede and Ravenscroft London. It is in a colour called salt and pepper. The design of the wig is ‘Traditional’
As you can see both items are in excellent condition. The black enamel of the paintwork on the oval wig box is very shiny and has lots of white and coloured reflections on it in my photos. These are not on the box - this is a rich black gloss finished with dull matt gold details.
The wig inside has been all handmade by the celebrated Ravenscroft of Lincoln's Inn Fields - and has their textile label inside and the tag for the owner, the Glasgow solicitor: A. Findlayson. The wig is generally nice and clean- but does have a natural aroma coming from the oils in the horse hair that the wig is made from.
The oval metal carry box goes with the wig - and as you can see it is also in just lovely condition - the owner must have taken great care of both items.
The wig and box belonged to A.F. Finlayson OBE - as annotated on the lid.
The owner was Archibald Fraser Finlayson who had a practice or firm in Glasgow. They were dissolved in 1992. So this court wig must now be well over 30 years old. There was a bit of a hoo-ha in the Scottish Press about the dissolution of the company back in the day!
Listed at a very fair price - new handmade wigs can cost about £500 and upwards - and that is without the tin storage box for it.
The price quoted is for both the wig and the box - as photographed.
The box measures: 11cm x 27cm x 20cm and is in lovely condition as photographed. The enamel is lovely and shiny - and the box is free from nasty dents etc to it.
Unpacked the wig and box are 800 grams. It would be about 1.5 kg all packed up. It is going to be around £25 to send tracked and recorded to the States etc.
