I am listing three similar antique cast brass pestle and mortar sets in my store. They were probably initially used in a chemist’s shop or by an apothecary to crush down ingredients to be used in pills and potions. Today – these now seem to be popular accessories in the kitchen. The brass is safe to use (as long as you are not regularly crushing up acidic items) and will easily crush up nuts, whole spices, garlic and chillies.
This is a fine antique example with a good bit of weight. It is made of a heavy cast brass. This one certainly has a good bit of weight to it. It is hard to even pick up, and it would be perfect for vigorous grinding. It is very substantial and this is reflected in my price.
It is an elegant trumpet shape with a raised brass decorative ring around the mortar body just above the handles. There is a little foot at the base.
The base is smooth but with little pit marks to the metal - commensurate with age and use. You would expect such marks on an antique one.
The mortar measures 4 1/4 inches in height and with a diameter of 4 1/2 inches at the top. The base has a diameter 3 inches. From handle to handle it is 5 1/4 inches. Unpacked it weighs 1.5 grams.
The pestle is 7 inches in length.
It is in good condition - with a nice patina of age, It has no nicks, scratches or dents.
Due to the weight - it would have to be sent UK Postage with Royal Mail Recorded (Large Parcel). This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
