This is a stylish rustic pattern on vintage Scottish studio pottery.
It was made by the Scottish potter, Barbara Davidson and dates to the 1970s or the early 1980s when she established her own studio pottery in Larbert.
Her work has always featured pretty stoneware bowls decorated with abstract designs relating to the sea, sky or shoreline.
Her pottery was founded in 1969 - so this piece must date to just after this time.
Barbara was brought up in Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland, and in 1964 attended Glasgow School of Art. One of her largest commissions was a larger ceramic mural measuring some 7 feet in length and 4 feet in height - this can still be seen in the Ladies' Waiting Room at Queen Street Station in Glasgow.
This is a very lovely complete stoneware coffee set. It has a coffee pot & lid, a milk jug and an open sugar bowl. It comes with six cups and saucers in a cream colour - or six extra oatmeal-coloured stoneware saucers or wee side plates. The saucers can be interchangeable within the set. Taking her influence from the natural world, the decoration on this set looks like abstracted plant forms.
It is a fine vintage 70s set of Scottish Art Pottery - with no damages. All the pieces are unused and all have their original paper label on the base - and impressed maker's marks as photographed.
Dimensions: The coffee pot is 8 1/2 inches in height. It has a diameter of 4 3/4 inches at the widest. The cups are 3 1/2 inches in height and have a diameter of 3 inches. The 12 saucers / side plates have a diameter of 5 1/2 inches. The milk jug is 3 1/2 inches in height and 4 inches from handle to spout. The sugar bowl is 2 3/4 inches in height and with a diameter of 3 3/4 inches.
This coffee set is hard-to-find and it is listed at a fair price. There is a collection of Davidson's ceramic work in the collection of Falkirk Museums.
