This ashtray is often known as the tennis ball because of its shape - and also as it was designed for Dunlop (celebrated for their top-class tennis rackets), These were issued as a special sports promotion - seems strange today that smoking paraphernalia was associated with sports.

The arms slide out from the centre as shown in my photographs.

It is now quite rare to find an example in such lovely condition - these bakelite “tennis ball” ashtrays date from about 1935 and are considered design classics.

The bottom half is black Bakelite and the top is a mottled phenolic plastic in an attractive cream colour to look like ivorine - as is the base and the arms with slide-out made from black bakelite.

The ashtray was made by Roanoid for Roxon Ltd. It was used as a special souvenir or advertising item for: MITCHELL. RUSSELL AND CO. LTD and their name is printed on the side, as photographed. This lettering could possibly be rubbed off with care. The little black letters have not been impressed into the surface - but it is part of its history.  Mitchell Russell was a Scottish Foundry.

It measures just under 9 cm in height and has a diameter of about 8.5 cm

It is in fine vintage condition with no disfiguring chips or restorations etc.

UK Postage Only. This will cost about £4.95 for Royal Mail Recorded - and will be applied to your order at the checkout.
