This is a highly collectable antique textile.

It is a genuine antique sampler - and is being sold as such with all your consumer rights in place.

It is one of four antique samplers in my Iconic Edinburgh online store - all dating to the 19th century.

This one is now 216 years old - and for its age, it is certainly in fine antique condition.

It is of a standard size - and the cotton is in good condition with no holes - it has discoloured naturally over the last two centuries and the textile has a beige colour commensurate with age. The edges have a bit of rippling and tiny losses - as photographed - but very minor in nature - and would be hidden by a mount if framed up for display. It looks just fine and dandy given its age - and its relative fragility. The cotton ground for the embroidery is woven much finer and it is of a lighter weight.

Dimensions: 44.5 x 21.5 cm.

The top section has an embroidered alphabet - done in ochre yellows and red threads - the colours are still bright and fresh. Although it is more difficult to read the yellow threads against the colour of the backing textile.

In the centre are a row of little crowns and with more alphabet letters below.

The lowest section of the sampler has a pretty pictorial scene - showing in the centre a single storey pink house with ochre door. Strange yellow trees to each side and funny little animals.

Below the pink house is the name of the creator of the sampler: MARY WYLIE SEW.

Then more (harder to read) letters - and the name of the Scottish maritime port: GREENOCK.

At the bottom - more trees, two birds, a red creature, a wee green bird. The stitcher's initials MW and the date 1803 - so dating to the times of George III

It is sold unframed - which makes it easy for you to fully check the condition, and allows you to see all the neat little knots in the thread where new thread was added during the stitching process - it looks nice and neat at the back - as to the front.
