This is an interesting 1920s Celtic Silver Pendant.

It is hallmarked on the back for the date 1923 and with the marks for Glasgow.

The brooch is also stamped IONA - and with the maker's letters for John McGilvray.

It is an interesting piece.

These silver Iona Dove pendants were also made by Alexander Ritchie in plain and enamelled silver versions - and (as is this one) also created from the same moulds in the 1920s by John McGilvray who hailed from Oban, but had business links with Iona.

The design was a popular one and was also made by Iain MacCormick after Ritchie's death in 1941. Some versions of this fine piece of jewellery appear as a brooch with a pin on the back - and as here, as a pendant to be worn from a chain.

It is finely cast with crisp detail - and obviously an early Iona related piece. The pendant shows a dove perched with open wings on a circular perch - with Celtic decoration at the top. The detail is still fine - later issues have lost a lot of this finer definition.

It measures 5.5 cm from wing tip to wing tip. The overall height is 4.3 cm.

The chain is not original to the pendant - but is a good quality sturdy silver chain with a longer length. It can go over your head without the need to open the clasp. The chain is 60 cm total length (24 inches) - so it has a nice long drop. It fits in nicely with the style of the pendant.

A special piece of Scottish silver, nearly 100 years old - obviously if it had been stamped AR - it would have had a much higher price tag - so listed at a fair price for this interesting piece with a good quality chain.
