Irene Segalla was born in Vienna. Examples of her costume designs are in the B. J. Simmons & Co. Costume Design Archive at the Harry Ransom Centre, The University of Texas, Austin.

She was perhaps most famously the costume assistant on the classic 1953 film, Genevieve. Later, in the 1950s she designed a variety of costumes for theatrical productions in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

A 1926 Viennese watercolour by Segalla, from the Rothschild Collection, sold at Christie’s, Paris on 26 October 2010 for 1,500 Euros.

I had two strange costume designs by Segalla - but one has now sold. Both these works were signed in monogram and dated.

This study is a strange one and shows a glamorous lady dressed up in a quirky jockey's costume. She wears a cap and a bodice like racing silks. She carries a whip in one hand and reins in the other - she wears little ballet pumps and this costume must be for a ballet production.

Segalla’s fine costume / theatrical studies made in the 1930s rarely come up for sale and are now hard to source.
