Torquay pottery was made in Devon, using local clay. It was one of fifteen potteries in the area who produced pieces mainly for the tourist industry.
My little set of three tea wares was made at the Longpark Pottery. This was set up in 1883 and closed in 1957. The teapot has a little local saying inscribed on the back of the pot - it reads: Dawntee be fraid / aut now. This phrase comes from the Devon dialect and translates as "Don;t be afraid, out now". It means "Don't be afraid, the kettle is boiling and the tea is ready to be served". So an appropriate motto to add to the design of a teapot.
This little set forms a complete lot made from red clay. It is listed here as made and retailed - all the decoration matches. It was made in Devon and exported to Great Yarmouth in Norfolk for their tourists. They are really sweet - and you could use them for display or for a little pot of tea for one using fancy loose teas.
The decoration features a blue and green band around the base representing the sea - and each item has a little boat with an ochre coloured sale and the words Great Yarmouth. All pieces in the set are in perfect condition with no damages.
The teapot measures: base to top of lid knop is 4 3/4 inches. From handle to spout it is 6 1/4 inches. The diameter at the widest point is 4 inches. The little open sugar bowl is 2 inches in height and with a diameter of 3 inches at widest. The milk jug is 2 1/4 inches in height. From handle to spout is just over 3 inches. The diameter at the widest is 2 1/2 inches.
Listing the set at £35 as it is a more unusual one and been together since the 1940s or 1950s.
