This is a most unusual watercolour by the British artist, Arthur Henry Knighton-Hammond (1875 - 1970).

Knighton-Hammond was an English painter best-known for landscapes, society portraits and industrial paintings. He used a variety of styles but is most famous as a water-colour painter.

It is obviously very much influenced by Whistler's images of the Rivier Thames - and how the images are very pared down to almost coloured washes. The image is untitled but looks like it is a mist-coved view of old London Bridge. This bridge was later sold in 1968 to an American Entrepreneur and then shipped stone by stone to the States.

This study seems to be a pendant picture to be hung with my other one offered in my store - the one looking at the bridge from the other direction.

This study is painted in the lightest and most subtle washes which range from light grey to white tones. The image is very minimalistic. It probably dates to around the mid-1920s when the artist was staying in London and exhibiting at the Fine Art Society in Bond Street. There is a similar pale image of the terrace of the House of Commons (illustrated as Plate 46) in Peter Norris's monograph on the artist.

These views of London by him are hard to source - and my asking price for them is a fair one.

This watercolour study is signed in pencil lower right: Knighton Hammond - and inscribed by the artist with the title lower left: London Bridge from the Tower 1925.

Knighton-Hammond was a member of leading watercolour societies in France and America and was the only English artist to have been elected to the American Watercolour Society New York apart from Sir William Russell Flint.

In Britain he showed at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the New English Art Club, the Royal Cambrian Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Fine Art Society and the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society.

Knighton-Hammond was described by his friend, the celebrated artist Augustus John as the greatest English painter in watercolour of our time.
