This is an interesting signed lithograph by the avant-garde German Dada artist, Hans Richter. It is a late work by him and dates to 1972.
Born Johannes Siegfried Richter on April 6, 1888 in Berlin, Germany. Between 1908 and 1911 Richter studied art at the Academy of Art in Berlin, the Academy of Art in Weimar, and for a brief period at the Académie Julian in Paris.
He was a friend of Dadaists Hugo Ball, Tristan Tzara and Jean (Hans) Arp. From 1917 to 1919 Richter was closely involved with Dada events, exhibitions, and publications, showing his paintings with the dadaists for the first time in January at the Galerie Corray. In 1923 Richter began publishing "G", a magazine that drew together the work of artists, architects, and writers associated with Dada, De Stijl, and international constructivism.
Forced to flee persecution by the Nazi regime during the 1930s, Richter travelled to the Soviet Union then the United States to escape. He spent his later years in Connecticut, returned to painting, and published the book Dada: Art and Anti-Art in 1965.
In 1972 Richter moved to Switzerland where he died in 1976.
This work is an artist's proof and has Richter's signature to the lower right - and an inscription saying that this work was a special gift to his Scottish friend, Peter Potter.
It has a blind stamp: FALLANI VENEZIA. Fallani Venezia is an artistic screen printing workshop, active since 1968 in the heart of Venice.
It prints high quality limited edition prints for artists.
This work is a rarer work by Richter and one which has a personal inscription for his friend, Peter Potter. In 1967 the impresario Peter Potter with Tom Criddle opened a gallery in the old fire station in Haddington,. Since Peter’s death in 1982 the gallery continued under the Peter Potter Charitable Trust was a venue for artists and craftsmen from East Lothian and beyond. Sadly, the Peter Potter Gallery closed in 2016. It is certainly a great loss to the local community.
I cannot find another impression of this print. Richter was of international standing and his archive is currently held in MoMa in New York. This is all taken into account with my pricing here. It come from my own personal collection and had hung at home to the last 20 years.
The print has not been laid down and the sheet is nice and clean with no condition issues. We have sent the picture to our picture framers. They have given it a new acid-free window mount and clean backing board, as photographed. It is sold re-mounted and is all to be framed by you. It is a lovely work and I have taken a picture of my husband holding it up in its new mount for presentation.
Dimensions: Mount Size is 62 x 49.5 cm. The image size is 41 x 29 cm.
It will be sent to you in the UK with Parcelforce24 and will be carefully packed and insured in transit. Due to the insurance premiums and the larger size of the work - we would have to cap the postage to you at £24.95.
