Frank Beanland was born in 1936 at Bridlington, Yorkshire. He studied at Hull College of Art from 1952 to 1957 and then at the Slade School of Fine Art 1959-61, where his teachers included Claude Rogers, Ceri Richards and Frank Auerbach. He won the prestigious Boise Scholarship and studied at the Royal Academy Stockholm 1962.

In 1962, the moved to Cornwall, where he and a number of other artists exhibited under the banner of the "Porthleven Group".

At Porthleven, he first developed his reputation as an abstract painter. Previously he had been making sculptural, monumental landscapes using a palette knife - but in Cornwall, perhaps being influenced by the proximity of the pebbles on the beach, his images began to fragment. He started putting down mark upon mark, layer Upton layer as he reformulated space on the surface of his paintings.

During the 1960s, he developed what became known as his 'spot paintings' which reflected his move from capturing texture to depicting light and colour. His deceptively simple abstract works are influenced by nature, his surroundings and his experience.

His "spots" works were first shown at the Grabowski Gallery in London. Beanland also exhibited with the London gallery, Arthur Tooth & Sons. He had an impressive exhibiting career and received many commissions for colourful screens and printed textiles for hospitals, churches, and private homes.

This painting uses quickly applied blocks of colours (red and blue) loosely applied in acrylic on paper - the sheet still has its deckled edge and it is mounted in a floating mount. The box frame is a sturdy white wooden one.

There is no signature on the front of the composition - but it is certainly signed on the reverse, as noted before framing. Beanland often did not sign the front of his works - so it is not unusual to have his signature on the reverse of the sheet.

Dimensions: Sheet size is 53.5 x 39.5. The frame size is 75 x 61 cm.

Many apologies for any random reflections on my photographs - it was a little tricky to photograph the artwork through the glass.

Beanland currently lives and works in East Anglia. His recent paintings are abstracted from nature and are often painted in acrylic on paper which allows him the freedom to work quickly and spontaneously.

UK Postage would cost about £14 - and this would be with Parcelforce24 and applied to your order at the checkout.
