This is simply the most wonderful etching by the celebrated marine artist, Arthur Briscoe (1873 - 1943).

Briscoe was a painter in oil and watercolour and etcher of marine subjects. He was born in Birkenhead and attended Shrewsbury School. Briscoe studied art at the Slade and at Julian's in Paris and then spent his time sailing.

He painted and wrote on yachting subjects including Handbook on Sailing under the nom de plume of Clove Hitch.

In 1922, after a meeting with the Scottish etcher James McBey, Briscoe returned to etching once more producing plates of some of his sea sketches.

Briscoe produced 189 etchings dealing with the sea and the sailing ship. These were eagerly sought after by collectors throughout the 1930s. Briscoe's original prints are now generally acknowledged as the finest marine etchings of the 20th century.

This magnificent print shows a sailing ship caught in a ferocious storm and waves are lashing over the decks and threatening to flood the ship.

The men on board are showing fighting against the elements and to try to stop the ship from sinking.

The strain on the men is captured by Briscoe and the surges of the waves are full of action.

This fine etching and drypoint dates to 1931. It is signed in pen and editioned 66 / 75

The image measures: 20.8 x 38.4 cm

It is sold in pristine condition. It is not framed - but has a new museum-quality acid-free mount - and it is ready just for you to select a frame of your choice from your local picture framers.

A very lovely and most sought-after print - and this is reflected in my asking price.

Postage will be with Royal Mail Special Next Day Delivery - this will cost £10 and applied to your order at the checkout.
