This is simply the most wonderful etching by the celebrated marine artist, Arthur Briscoe (1873 - 1943).

Briscoe was a painter in oil and watercolour and an etcher of marine subjects. He was born in Birkenhead and attended Shrewsbury School. Briscoe studied art at the Slade and at Julian's in Paris and then spent his time sailing.

He painted and wrote on yachting subjects including Handbook on Sailing under the nom de plume of Clove Hitch.

In 1922, after a meeting with the Scottish etcher James McBey, Briscoe returned to etching once more producing plates of some of his sea sketches.

Briscoe produced 189 etchings dealing with the sea and the sailing ship. These were eagerly sought after by collectors throughout the 1930s. Briscoe's original prints are now generally acknowledged as the finest marine etchings of the 20th century.

This is an extremely rare print by Briscoe - and I cannot find another impression of this work available on the recent market.

My impression has a low edition number - being No. 3 out of a proposed limited edition of only 50 impressions - perhaps not all of the edition was eventually completed, which might explain why it is hard to find other impressions.

There is not even an impression of his interesting Briscoe drypoint in the British Museum's collection.

It is titled below "The Fight" and is signed in pen. It is also titled, signed, and dated in the plate.

The image is very busy and vigorous and seems to show a fight or mutiny on the deck of an old sailing ship. Men are shown in a scrum and batons are being raised above their heads.

It is sold in pristine condition. It is not framed - but has a new museum-quality acid-free mount - and it is ready just for you to select a frame of your choice in your local picture framers.

Dimensions: 25 x 22.5 cm

A very interesting Briscoe print of museum quality - and probably a print that is not in many collections due to its rarity. This is reflected in my asking price.

Postage in the UK will be with Royal Mail Special Next Day Delivery. This will cost £10 and applied to your order at checkout.
