This is a rare landscape etching by James McNeill Whistler (1834 - 1903) and it dates to around 1859. The image was probably done at the same time as Whistler was out sketching in Greenwich with his friend Seymour Haden.

It is number 41 in Glasgow University's Catalogue Raisonne of his Etchings.

There are inscriptions on the sheet in pencil - which erroneously entitles this work as Kensington Gardens: Second State - but it transpires that this is actually a view in Greenwich Park.

The first state is mostly etching, but in the second state drypoint was used to extend and enrich the textures and shadows.

The copper plate was steel-faced and it is possible that some impressions of the third state and final state were printed after Whistler's death.

The image is 12.8 x 20.8 cm

Glasgow University describes the work as follows: The trunks and lower branches of several trees are seen, rising from a grassy slope. The foreground is shaded by their foliage. In the middle distance, in full sun, two people are sitting in the grass, glimpsed between the two largest tree trunks, and to the right, a girl is standing looking away, towards the distant trees over the brow of the hill.

Glasgow University in its Catalogue Raisonne has identified 38 other impressions in prestigious public and a few private collections.

This is being sold as an original etching by Whistler - it is NOT a photographic reproduction or photogravure. Full refunds apply if you are not fully satisfied with the work.

Of course, more photographs and a full condition report can be supplied on request to interested customers.

Sadly due to insurance restrictions for international postage, I would only be prepared to send this work to addresses in the UK. This will be with Royal Mail Special Next Delivery and will cost £14 - this will be applied to your order at the checkout.
