This is a rare and attractive little watercolour sketch by the celebrated Scottish artist, David Octavius Hill (1802 - 1870).
It is a view from Craigmillar Castle, looking Towards Leith and the Firth of Forth
David Octavius Hill was born in 1802 in Perth. He was a painter of romantic landscapes and most notably a pioneer photographer.
This is a typical watercolour landscape sketch by Hill and shows a view from near Craigmillar Castle - looking over the fields to Leith. The scene is quickly sketched in with black chalk and highlighted with watercolour. This quick sketch was possibly made with the intention of developing the image into an oil painting back in Hill’s studio - there are a number of colour notes in the sky and the fields in the foreground. The scene shows how the Eastern route into Edinburgh from the South was once pastoral land before the development of the area by the Victorians.
Landscape studies by D.O. Hill do not come on the market very often, and this is a rare little “on-the-spot” sketch. It is unsigned but is comparable with other watercolour studies held in the National Gallery of Scotland.
It is being sold as a genuine watercolour work by Hill. I have shown it to an expert on Hill's works and they confirm this attribution.
I have had it recently professionally re-framed with a new acid-free window mount. The wooden frame moulding is a mid-grey tone that picks up on some of the tones present in the sky. It is in excellent condition and ready for you to hang straight on your wall.
