This is a fine early print by the Scottish artist Jane Hyslop. She was born in Edinburgh 1967.
It is an early linocut by her showing the town of San Gimignano in Tuscany. It is a UNESCO site and is renowned for its 14 surviving medieval stone tower houses, earning it the nickname "Town of Fine Towers". The composition shows two tall towers on the foreground, and in the distance there are a patchwork view of fields. The viewpoint is a bird's eye one - and Jane has added lots of birds flitting about in the sky on her eye-line.
Jane Hyslop studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1985-1989. Her work is in many prominent public collections, including the Yale Centre for British Art, the Tate Gallery, the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, the Scottish Mining Museum, Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery, etc.
Jane Hyslop has a special interest in Artists' Books and Printmaking. She studied Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art between 1984 and 1990, She was the recipient of an RSA John Kinross Travel Scholarship in 1989. This print is an early work and it would date to her travels to the Continent and her representations of some of the architecture, topography and historical events that she encountered in Italy.
In a recent interview Jane stated "The John Kinross Scholarship is one of the most valuable and memorable times in my career. It was such an incredible opportunity and I made so many discoveries when in Italy. I based myself in Florence with two other John Kinross Scholars from Edinburgh College of Art, and we explored many other towns and cities during our three month stay".
Jane Hyslop was a lecturer in art and illustration at the ECA (University of Edinburgh) until 2025. She was elected RSA in 2020.
This print dates to 1989 when Jane graduated with a BA in drawing in painting at the ECA, and then went on to study as a postgraduate for a further year. This work dates to this time and from a very small edition of only 15 impressions of this print. This is the second impression: No. 2. An impression of this print is in the collection of the Royal Scottish Academy.
My linocut has a nice fresh acid-free window mount and new frame. It is excellent condition and ready just to hang on your wall. Dimensions. The frame is 45.5 x 37 cm. The image size is 22 x 18 cm. All this is reflected in my asking price - which is a very fair one for one of Hyslop's early linocuts and from such a same edition.
