This is an attractive limited edition screenprint by the Scottish artist, Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925 - 2006).
It was made in 1971 in collaboration with Ian Proctor and Ron Costley. The print was originally issued and presented unframed in a paper folder - the interior of the folder contains a short essay by Stephen Bann. The folder and screenprint are from a small limited edition of 350 works. The folder is signed and edition numbered by Finlay on the reverse. This one is No. 91. It was 'printed by Shenval in two colours at the Wild Hawthorn Press at Dunsyre in Lanark.
It is a simple, but very attractive pictorial image of groupings of seashells and is titled within the image. It comes complete with its original folder.
We have had the original screenprint re-framed for sale. It comes with a fresh new window mount and this has been put back into its original chrome metal frame. There are a couple of little marks to the top - but nothing distracting or of worry - just commensurate with age. It is certainly well presented and all ready for you just to hang on your wall. The fact that it is now a hard-to-find early 1970s artwork by Finlay is reflected in my asking price.
BIOGRAPHY: Ian Hamilton Finlay is one of the most innovative and wide-ranging artists working in Scotland. He was born in the Bahamas in 1925 to Scottish parents who returned to Scotland when he was a child.
After a brief spell at the Glasgow School of Art, he began his career as a writer and played a leading part in the 'concrete poetry' movement. He is best known for Little Sparta, his home in the Pentland Hills, which he transformed into an original modern conception of a classical garden with sculptures and stone inscriptions carefully placed within the landscape.
