Alexander Kellock Brown was a celebrated Scottish artist – best known for his depictions of the Scottish landscape. He painted in oils and watercolour and exhibited on a regular basis at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, from 1871 up until his death in 1922.

He was an apprentice in the design depart of calico prints in Glasgow for seven years and attended night classes at Glasgow School of Art.

He was friends with fellow landscape artist James Docharty and with the famous Glasgow Boy, E.A. Walton. The muted colours and composition of this painting by Brown clearly shows the influence of Walton on his work – he is certainly very typical of a study painted by one of the Glasgow Boys.

Kellock Brown served for a time as President of the Glasgow Art Club (please see my rare little ceramic ashtray from the club in my store).

This painting is typical of his work and possibly painted at Helensburgh, where the artist lived in the 1890s.

Its impressionistic style suggests that it was painted “en plein air” - and the glowing colours with an emphasis of orange, ochre and yellow tones suggests an autumnal scene – the landscape is this main focus – but if you look closely you can see a wee Scots laddie leaning into a Highland burn and watching the water below. The artist loved to paint views across the landscape from a higher vantage point and include little subtle staffage figures in the scene – to give a little feeling to life and vitality to the landscape setting.

Obviously, a work which was painted to be exhibited in a prestigious Scottish gallery as it has been framed with such an elaborate Victorian giltwood frame. The frame is original to the painting – and both are in very good antique condition. The painting is oil on board – which Brown used from time to time.

Signed with the artist’s usual monogram signature in the bottom right hand corner: A.K.B.

The frame measures 46.5 x 56.5 cm and the image is 24 x 34.5 cm.

It is a nice size - and I have included an image of Robert holding it up so that you can a better idea of scale.

I hope that my photographs do this very subtle Scottish landscape justice - it was hard to photograph as the oil painting itself as a slight shine - and furthermore it is glazed - so gives quite a lot of reflections. It looks much better in real life than in my photographs.
