This is a late 20th century etching by the London-based artist John Duffin. He was born in 1965 at Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. He began printmaking whilst studying for a Fine Art BA at Goldsmiths’ College in London (1985). He subsequently completed a Masters in Printmaking at Central St Martins College of Art.
Duffin is best known for his striking black-and-white prints focusing on architecture, and depictions of modern life in urban environments - especially locations around London. He likes to depict the buildings at different times of the day - and often likes to use usual viewpoints and bird's eye views. His work often has a very dramatic feel to it and reminds me a little of architectural images made back in the 1930s.
In the lower right hand corner - we can see the iconic Eros scultpure - it stands with his bow and arrow; he seems so completely disjointed from the modern world surrounding him. I would suspect - that this print must date to the 1980s - based on the products being advertised on the neon hoardings. At the top under Real - we have a sign for Pepsi. below is a sign for TDK cassette tapes and at the bottom for Sanyo - which was a very popular brand in the late 20th century - but now now so much.
It is a busy junction - with lots of little figures scuttling about like little ants - they cross the road and taxis and large cars pulled up to allow them to cross. The image is full of drama and atmosphere. How fabulous will it look in a premise near Piccadilly or Oxford Street.
Dimensions: the frame size is 67/5 x 55 cm. The image size is 37.5 x 25.5 cm.
Unpacked it weights nearly 3.4 kg
This print is in just such fabulous condition with no condition problems of any kind. The artist looks down from the top of one of the high buildings to the south of Piccadilly Circus. It has a very Art Deco cinematic feel and style to it.
It is signed John Duffin / PICCADILLY CIRCUS / with the edition number 6 / 90.
It is beautifully presented - with a thick black wooden frame with a modern matt finish. It also has a new deep fresh window mount - the inner edge of which has been coloured black - to form a decorative band around the printed sheet.
My price takes into account the good quality frame and exemplary presentation of this fine signed modern British etching.
