This is a collectable vintage experimental artwork by the artist Peter Bevan.

Peter Bevan (1946 - 2018) was a versatile artist who taught for many years at Glasgow School of Art.

He was born in 1946 in Walsall in the West Midlands. He studied for a fine art degree at Cheltenham Art School and subsequently moved to London in 1968 where he studied at the Royal College of Art until 1971.

Bevan moved to Glasgow in 1973 when he was offered a teaching post at Glasgow School of Art. There, he taught both academic and experimental drawing on the first-year programme, He worked at the College right up to his retirement in 2003. In retirement, he used his time to pursue a series of wide-ranging artistic pursuits and artist in residence appointments. He continued to work right up until his death in 2018.

This is a very early work by Bevan - it is one work from a series of nine published sheets by various artists - which were issued by John Furnival's Openings Press at Woodchester in Gloucestershire. This one by Bevan is dated May 1965.

The production was to "to produce a series which is a complete integration of graphics and text, ie not an illustrated poem or a captioned drawing".

Only 500 of these sheets were published and each was issued as a quirky folded artwork. Each sheet was edition numbered (as you would find on a traditional art print) and this one is No. 435 / 500.

It seems that nine of these items were published as a limited edition series of nine works - this is No.4.

It features a poem by Melvin Clay and a fantastic 60s illustration by Bevan.

This one is : 48 Hours of Cloud. Opening No 4 (May 1965). It was issued as a single folded sheet designed by Peter Bevan. The work measures 12 x 47cm when fully extended and folds up to a parallelogram measuring 14 cm.

It is in excellent condition with no damages.

This is a very interesting artwork from the 1960s - not many of these now survive - it is lovely as a piece of ephemera - but of course, it can also be fully extended (as photographed) and framed as an artwork.

Listed at a very fair price - for this interesting archive piece.
