his is a fine vintage figure study or sketch by the celebrated English artist, Nigel Lambourne.

He was born in Croydon in 1919. He studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic, then the Central School of Arts and Crafts in the 1930s, and subsequently at the Royal College of Art with Robert Austin and Malcolm Osborne.

In the late 1940s, he began to establish himself as an illustrator of books for the Folio Society.

He exhibited at the prestigious Colnaghi Gallery in 1947.

In 1950 - 1952 Lambourne worked on the Festival of Britain South Bank Exhibition.

Lambourne was certainly a fine draughtsman which is revealed in this quick sketch in black chalk of a nude lady arranging her long dark hair.

It relates to a small series of prints Lambourne made in the 1960s showing this lady playing with her hair and entitled "Hairdressing". Although my sketch is not signed (indeed I certainly wouldn't expect a life sketch to be signed!) - it is most probably a quick sketch made in 1962 when he was making his series of lithographs and wood engravings of this model in similar poses. It is without any doubt by Lambourne.

These quick studies on thin paper are now rare survivors and my price for this very attractive chalk drawing is a fair one.

It is framed in its original black frame and ready to hang. The drawing is in good condition with no condition issues - the paper has a slight time tone to the sheet - due in the main to Lambourne using lower quality papers for his life studies and quick sketches. These cheaper papers will naturally change their tone a little over time.

Image size: 46.5 x 29 cm. Frame size: 61 x 41 cm.

A fair price for this very attractive mid-century figure study by this fine artist.

UK Postage is quoted with Parcelforce24 - this will cost £10 and applied to your order at the checkout.
