This is a lovely antique portrait drawing of a naval officer. It dates to around the 1820s or 1830s.
It is a fine study and stylistically it looks to fine Neo-Classical portraits by the French artist, Ingres.
Sadly, the creator of this fine study has not signed his work, so any attribution is always going to be speculative.
The drawing is in pencil (with some touches of grey wash) on a wove paper which Ingres also favoured. Its smooth surface was so receptive to the finest of drawn lines.
The drawing is certainly a highly decorative one and the sitter is certainly very easy on the eye, and certainly a most handsome chap. He cuts a dashing figure in his naval uniform.
So not really much to add here; an attractive British School, early 19th-century drawing.
Dimensions: 17.5 x 14.2 cm. Frame size: 41 x 37 cm
Listed at a fair price for such a charming and well-delineated work.
Now if you can attach an attribution to it... well, you have a great bargain, but as sold it is certainly a beautiful decorator's addition.
