Claire Harrigan was born in Kilmarnock in 1964. Both her parents were art teachers and painters - her mother, Elspeth Harrigan, a respected botanical artist and her father, James Harrigan, the acclaimed landscape artist.
She studied at the Glasgow School of Art, graduating 1986. She was widely travelled and visited the West Indies, France, Portugal and Italy.
My vibrantly coloured oil pastel study must have been executed at a warm Continent location. It looks very Mediterranean in feel – with the leafy garden and blue skies seen through the open French windows. In front of the windows, we can see a little breakfast table and a comfy blue armchair. Dark blue curtains frame the window and hang from a long wooden curtain pole above the door frame.
Harrigan’s use of Mediterranean colours is quite magical – the composition and vibrant hues remind me of similar paintings made by Matisse in the South of France.
In 1992 she was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW).
Harrigan favours the use of mixed media with acrylic, watercolour, or gouache features in her artworks. She finishes off her pictures with the use of bright oil pastels.

My lovely interior study by her dates to 1996 – has a base layer of acrylic paint which has then been worked up with the oil pastel. It has a nice large white wooden frame and broad window mount, as photographed. It is ready for you to just hang on your wall.
Dimensions: The frame is 67 x 57 cm ; The image is 41.5 x 32 cm
