Here we have on offer these two miniature framed oil paintings:
A / View of the Old Church Chelsea from Battersea with Old Battersea Bridge to the Left - (Image: 12.5 x 17.5 cm; Frame: 16.5 x 21.5 cm)
& B/ View of Turner’s House, 119 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea - (Image: 17 x 11.5 cm; Frame: 21 x 15.5 cm).
The actual house where Turner resided in London has gone on the market in early 2023 for a hefty sum of £11 million pounds. So perhaps this would make a lovely housewarming present for the new owner? The original 17th-century building has not changed much over the years - and still looks very much like the riverside residence that is depicted in my little painting.
These two charming little oil studies date toward the end of the 19th century.
They are both signed by R.J. Abraham - probably Robert John Abraham who designed decorative tiles for Copeland.
In the late 19th century the small fishing village of Chelsea expanded rapidly and became a haven for artists and writers. The area offered cheap rents, interesting housing, and a more rural environment just outside the City of London. For more than 60 years artists' communities dominated Chelsea life - and they often led flamboyant, bohemian lifestyles. Famous Chelsea residents included not only JMW Turner - but later in the 19th century Oscar Wilde, James McNeill Whistler, George Eliot, and Henry James.
The pair are of a small scale with matching gold frames and both are glazed. They are nicely presented and ideal for amodern domestic interiors.
Very decorative pieces - and of course of special interest if you are interested in historical Chelsea views or the history of Copeland ceramics. They are both beautifully painted and certainly a pair of little gems - you won't be disappointed with them.
I have taken lots of images for your inspection.
The price quoted here is for BOTH little antique paintings - as photographed. The price to post will be £10 for Special Next Day Delivery in the UK. This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
