This is a much earlier mug printed with a Bedlington Terrier motif. It was made by C.W.S (Co-operative Wholesale Society Ltd Pottery) based at Longton. They manufactured produced commenorative wares for a number of Co-op branches and districts - generally to celebrate Gala or Anniversary events.
These little Bedlington mugs dating to 1911 are now very rare. I have two of these Edwardian Co-op mugs listed in my store. They are both about the same size but slightly different shapes.
Dimensions: this one is is 3 ¼ inches in height and 3 ¼ inches at the rim
Interestingly the CWS pottery was also based at Longton (the same as my later Royal Grafton examples, perhaps the company adapted the earlier transfer prints on their 50s pieces).
This mug has a crest or dedications printed on the back: This reads In Commemoration of the Jubilee of the Bedlington Equirable Industrial Cooperative Society 1861 - 1911. My price reflects that these two mugs are now rather rare survivors. They are in excellent condition being 114 years old.
The Bedlington Terrier originated in the village of Bedlington in the north of England. It has the longest unbroken pedigree of any dog, stretching back to the late 1700’s.
