This is a lovely large Arts and Crafts Vase made by Royal Doulton in the 1930s.

It was designed by the celebrated artist and designer Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867 – 1956). He was well versed in Arts and Crafts design having been apprenticed to William Morris in 1884 and was a friend of the Doulton designer, Charles Noke.

Royal Doulton (Lambert Art Pottery) introduced Brangwyn Ware in 1930. It was always a good quality but simple design as Brangwyn wished for it to be affordable to people of “moderate means”. The retail prices were set low – but the wares did not attract great sales. Production ceased in the early 1940s.

This is a lovely example and it looks good on display. It has no chips or cracks. But there is some routine craquelure to the glaze - this seems to be a common age-related occurrence on these Brangwyn pieces -  the crazing of more pronounced on the base (as photographed) but it is certainly not going up onto the main upper body section of the vase. Any routine, light and fine craquelure is only noticeable in close-up inspection. I have taken a lot of images for to check this - these can be supersized. This issue has been reflected in a lower asking price for this piece.

The vase is made of heavy earthenware that has underglaze painted with blue, yellow, orange, yellow, green and purple shades to create linear decoration and floral motifs. The whole piece was then covered in a cream glaze with hints of green.

A similar jug is currently on display in the Ceramics Gallery of the Victorian and Albert Museum, London.

Dimensions: the height is 7 1/2 inches and it has a diameter at the widest point is 6 1/4 inches. Unpacked it is 1.3 kg in weight.
