This is a unique vintage early 1970s platter which was made at Polperro Pottery in Cornwall. It is marked with the letter "P" on the reverse, as photographed.
Polperro Pottery was up by Frank and Angie Robinson after moving to Polperro in 1966,. On stylistic basis I am suggesting that my platter was possibly made by Frank Robinson, who sadly died in 1974 at the young age of 42.
Though others continued at the pottery until its closing in the early 80s, they would use their own mark alongside the 'P'. The lack of another potter's mark on my plate would also suggest an attribution to Robinson.
My plate takes the form of a larger platter with raised rim around the edge - or it could be classified as a shallow dish. It is decorated with a brown glaze with a slight lustre or sheen to it - and with incised lines and raised glazed circular shapes. The decoration is very masterful and very iconic of early 70s Cornish pottery - with their reliance on abstract shapes and brown shades.
The clay looks like it has been rolled out in creation on a thick hessian material - as the back has a texture like a textile - the clay is red and there is a glaze around the rim on the reverse.
It is a nice large size and measures 20 inches x 12 inches. It is rare to find a piece of vintage Polperro Pottery by Mr Robinson on this scale and this is reflected in my asking price. You certainly won't find another like it easily.
It will have to be sent to you with Parcelforce24. This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
