These vintage mid-century Casa Pupo lamps are now highly collectable. This matched pair has a bulbous shape and a classic white glaze. They are both in good condition with no chips and both bear the printed Casa Pupo mark on the base. They were probably made in Spain and imported by Casa Pupo for their shops in the UK.
HISTORY: Casa Pupo was a successful retail business in the UK during the 1960s and 1970s. They specialized in selling imported Spanish and Portuguese ceramics to the UK consumer. They also sold rugs and bedding - all things for the up-market house.
The company was founded in 1960s by Geoffrey Dobson (an advertising lawyer) and his Spanish partner Jose "Pupo" Casasus. They started selling from a small shop at 56-60 Pimlico Road, London, and soon expanded to multiple locations across the UK - including Harrogate, Brighton, Richmond, Guildford, Glasgow (where this pair must have come from); they soon expanded to having even more shops worldwide!
They stocked strange china tigers and immense ornate china lamps - which were snapped up to decorate the embassies clustered around Belgrave Square, as well as wealthy residents in nearby houses. Anthony Armstrong-Jones had a studio just around the corner from the Pimlico shop. They were considered at the time to be chic, high-end fashion items.
Casa Pupo was best known for its white ceramics, as well as vibrant colors and designs for textiles, and is often associated with the Mid-Century Modern style. Some items were rather fanciful in form - my lamps are more stylish and with a simple bulbous shape. The company stopped trading at some time in the 1980s.
Today Casa Pupo's products are popular with collectors, and the brand is remembered for its contribution to British interior design in the 1960s and 70s.
It is nice to find a matched pair - and these simple bottle shaped lamps have a more minimalistic 1960s design suitable for modern interiors. The were possibly bought from the shop in Glasgow. These lamps often sell for much higher prices with specialist collectors. My price for this pair is a fair one. There is a little customary crazing to the glaze on the lamps - but this is commensurate with age and not noticeable unless on close up inspection (and taken this into consideration with my pricing). These lamps as matched pairs are hard to find - imagine how fabulous they will look in a 1960s interior with large white drum shades on them!
They measure: The height from base to the top of the bulb holder is 17 inches. From the base to top of the ceramic section is 14 1/2 inches. The diameter at the widest is 9 inches. I have taken lots of photographs of both the lamps in the pair for your inspection.
