This is a very attractive and highly collectable fine bone china Wedgwood plate. It dates to around 1955. The dolphin design was made by Laurence Whistler (1912 - 2000), brother of the painter, Rex Whistler. The design features a transfer print of a stylized fish in the middle of the plate with shells, starfish and seaweed running around the rim. The edge has gold gilding around the edge.
My pink plate is in perfect condition - but sadly this one has three very fine parallel little scratches on the shiny white glaze - above the tail of the dolphin. These cannot be seen when the plate is on display - but are obvious when the plate is titled towards a raking light, I have tried to photograph these wee marks for you (as in extreme close up in my last two photos). Due to these wee blemishes - I have reduced this plate from £95 - down to £75.
Sir Laurence Whistler was a celebrated poet, pioneering glass engraver and architectural historian.
This large plate has a predominate yellow colouring (with pink highlights). There are examples of this design in the collection of the V&A, London (the pink and yellow versions). Whistler produced many designs in the 1950s for Wedgwood - and many are in the museum collection. These Whistler designs remind me of similar ones for Wedgwood made by Eric Ravilious.
It is fully marked on the back with the following inscription placed inside an illustration of a fish: DOLPHIN BY / LAURENCE WHISTLER / WEDGWOOD / BARLASTON / MADE IN ENGLAND'.
It has a diameter of 10 3/4 inches.
