This is one of a selection of Viking Galleon Pattern jugs by that I have on my website.

This is a rare piece of vintage Honiton Art Pottery. It is a very fine piece of vintage Devonshire pottery - dating to the early / mid 20th century. You more often find Honiton Items that are decorated with floral patterns and the viking ship jugs are certainly harder to find.

Honiton is a beautiful town in Devon. At the end of the 19th century it was on the main road from London to Cornwall, and in an ideal situation to attract visiting and passing tourists. Honiton Pottery dates back to 1881, sadly its early days are not well documented.

Charles Collard set up his pottery in the High Street in 1918. He was a well-known figure in West Country pottery circles, having previously owned the Crown Dorset Art Pottery in Poole, Dorset. His wares were decorated over a white slip, which was already glazed and had a strong resemblance to Poole pottery. Production steadily increased and reached a peak in the 1930s.

This beautiful jug is made from heavy stoneware. The shape number is 34 (as annotated on the base).  There is an impressed mark on the base: Collard Honiton England

The jug has been hand-painted with stunning images of a Viking ship under full sail on both sides of the pot. The painting is very free and uses a combination of pink and lilac colours that are typically found in other more common Honiton pieces.

The jug is in excellent condition with no damages. Love the big heavy loop handle with blue lines on it as decoration.

It is 7 3/4 inches in height. The diameter at the widest point is 5 1/2 inches. It is just over 1 kg in weight.

For a fine and unusual piece of British Art Pottery - my price for it is certainly a fair one - probably more of an item for the collector of Honiton wares to add to their collection. As mentioned, I have a few of these stunning Art Pottery Viking Ship jugs in my store. They are so fabulous!

My lovely jug will have to be sent as a medium parcel tracked and signed for with the Royal Mail.
