This is an early 20th-century oil lamp.
The main body section of the lamp is made of hand-blown aubergine glass. This is a dark plum-purple shade and the surface of the glass has been decorated with a pattern of raised oval shapes. These are clear and have little bands around each one, as photographed.
There is a brass fittment to contain the wick and the little wheel to turn the wick up and down. The thick cloth wick is still present and in good condition. The glass lamp chimney sits on the gallery and is held in place with four raised finger sections.
There seems to be a little mark on the base that reads MR, These lamps were especially popular in America - and this one possibly originates in the States.
All pieces making up the lamp are in very good condition. The total height of the lamp and its clear glass funnel is 17 1/2 inches (44 cm). The maximum width is just over 4 inches. The diameter at the base is also about 4 inches.
The simple design of this antique oil lamp suggests that it would have been designed for use in a bedroom or private apartment space. More sophisticated lamps with brass columns would be used in parlours and more public rooms in Victorian / Edwardian interiors.
