This is a most sought after etching and drypoint by the celebrated marine artist, William Lionel Wyllie.

Wyllie was born in London in 1851. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools (1866-69), where he won the Turner Medal in his final year. He worked as a marine illustrator for the Graphic between 1870 and 1890.

Wyllie was Marine Painter to the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, and did much work, including posters, for the Orient Company, the White Star Line and the Union Castle Line.

Between 1924 and 1930 he worked on a fabulous panoramic oil painting depicting the Battle of Trafalgar for the Victory Museum, Portsmouth.

This beautifully rendered etching and drypoint is one of three prints that he produced which depicted the action at the Battle of Trafalgar. All hung together the set would form an almost panoramic view of the battle as envisaged by Wyllie.

The print dates to the Etching Revival of the 1920s when he was also working on his large oil.

It is pencil signed, lower left.

Dimensions: Image size is 19 x 40.5 cm. The mount size is 40 x 55.5 cm.

It is NOT a reproduction and original signed impressions of it are rare, especially in such a fine condition

As you can see from my images - it is really a most fantastic impression with beautiful dark tones and rich velvety burr to the drypoint. The details are just exquisite and it is certainly an impression of museum quality.

It is in the finest of conditions with no issues of any sort and recently re-mounted in a new acid-free mount to museum standards. It is sold unframed and can be just pop into your framer to frame with a choice of frame to suit your decor.

The print has been hinged onto the backing board at the top - it has not been laid down or glued onto the backing sheet. The sheet is clean without any spotting or staining.

My price for this most sought after Wyllie etching is a very fair one, especially given its impeccable condition and the rich burr to the drypoint, suggesting an early impression from Wyllie's copperplate.
