This is another sought-after etching & drypoint by the celebrated marine artist, William Lionel Wyllie.  It was published in 1913,

The fine etching is entitled: The Rock of Gibraltar. It is a much harder to find work by Wyllie - and this is reflected in my asking price. It comes from a series of maritime views that Wyllie made around the Mediterranean.

Wyllie was born in London in 1851. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools (1866-69), where he won the Turner Medal in his final year. He worked as a marine illustrator for the Graphic between 1870 and 1890.

Wyllie was Marine Painter to the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, and did much work, including posters, for the Orient Company, the White Star Line and the Union-Castle Line.

Between 1924 and 1930 he worked on a fabulous panoramic oil painting depicting the Battle of Trafalgar for the Victory Museum, Portsmouth.

It is NOT a reproduction but an original pencil signed drypoint and etching. I think it comes from an edition of 160 impressions that were published in 1913 and the copper plate was subsequently destroyed.

As you can see from all my images - it is really a fine clean impression. The details are just exquisite and it is certainly an impression of museum quality. The drypoint is printed on 'JW Whatman' cream wove paper

It is in very good condition with no foxing or marks on the sheet.

Dimensions: The image size is 21.5 x 48.5 cm.

The frame size is 31 x 50.6 cm.

It has recently been professionally re-framed and has a new cream-coloured acid-free window mount. It is beautifully presented and ready for you to hang straight on your wall.

Postage would have to be with Parcelforce24 to you - this will be capped at £10.

HISTORY: The Rock of Gibraltar with Europa Point sitting at its southern extremity (here on the right) is a landmark known not only to generations of mariners who have sailed past or taken shelter in Gibraltar Bay or the Rock’s harbour but also to readers of books who have seen countless paintings and photographs of the “Pillars of Hercules” guarding the western end of the Mediterranean Sea.

Wyllie has shown what looks like the two battle cruisers HMS RENOWN and REPULSE leading a formation of ships coming out of the harbour. As always Wyllie's details are also made with the most subtle of line work and touches. In this etching: the weather looks none too pleasant and even the big ships are securing their focsles for heavy weather that lies out beyond the Straits
