This is a stunning original pencil-signed etching made by the Scottish artist, John Houston (1930 - 2008). It is in excellent vintage condition - with lovely dark etched lines and touches of watercolour colour notes or highlights by the artist.
Houston was born in Buckhaven in Fife in 1930 and trained at Edinburgh College of Art. He then taught at the College from 1948 until 1954 and held the post of Deputy Head of the School of Drawing and Painting from 1955 until 1989.
In 1957 he helped start the 57 Gallery in Edinburgh, exhibiting there with his first solo show in 1958. He was later honoured with a major retrospective celebrating his life and work at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2005.
He was married to the celebrated Scottish artist Elizabeth Blackadder (1931 - 2021).
This expressionistic print by John Houston is typical of his late style. It shows a distant view of the Bass Rock, East Lothian. Houston's expressionist style is certainly well suited to capturing the ferocity of this wild Scottish storm. The etched lines are deeply bitten and nice and dark. Houston has also added some touches of watercolour to enliven the image.
It is signed and inscribed with the title and numbered 39 out of a small edition of only 50 impressions. It is signed in pencil to lower margin,
The image size is 30 x 45 cm. The frame size is 55 x 70 cm.
My print is in excellent condition with no issues and has a lovely light-coloured quality wooden frame - all ready to hang straight on your wall. It is listed at a fair price - I have not seen one before with the hand-colouring to the impression.
