On offer here is this attractive lidded serving dish or tureen It was made by Johnson Brothers - as you can see on the lovely back stamp on the base. The pattern name is Autumn Leaves
Johnson Brothers were probably looking at similar designs made by Eric Ravilious and issued by Wedgwood as their "Garden" series.
This design features a spindly tree that is dropping its leaves in the autumn. The leaves flutter through the air. The colours used by Johnson Brothers are also very reminiscent of the Ravilious palette on the Wedgwood designs. These ones would have been a more affordable alternative and would have been had at a fraction of a Ravilious original.
I love the bright pastel lemon yellow colour on the inside of the base section - and the cute little curled knop or handle on the lid.
These Autumn Leaves ceramics probably date to the mid-1950s. They are now rarer survivors and not so many dinnerware pieces with this pattern seem to have survived. The rarity of these, the attractiveness of the design, and the fact that these are now over 60 years old and in generally good vintage condition are reflected in my asking price.
This is a pretty decorative lidded dish for serving cold foodstuffs onto the more formal dining table. It measures 9 3/4 inches in diameter (the bowl section below is 9 inches) and has a height of 4 1/2 inches.
Unpacked it is 950 grams in weight
It is in fine vintage condition with no chips or cracks. There are no disfiguring cutlery marks on the pattern or surface.
