
This is sweet little square face pot or "Twarze Wason" " designed by the celebrated Polish ceramic artist Janina Karczewska Konieczna in the 1970s.
It is typical in form of other face pots she produced at this time. This little pot has delicately sculpted or moulded faces seen in profile on each corner of the pot and a lovely Royal blue crackle glaze with a subtle lustre finish to it. The rim of the pot is naturally rippled all around. Many of her works featured human faces seen in profile. These little pots by Konieczna are now highly sought after.
Dimensions: The height is just over 3 inches and the width is just over 2 1/4 inches square. It is in excellent condition with no damages.
HISTORY: Janina Karczewska-Konieczna was born in 1934 in Gdynia, Poland. She is a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and ceramicist. Konieczna graduated from the Fine Arts High School in Gdynia Orłowo, and received a diploma with distinction from the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk.
She was a member of the "Kadyńska Group" where she excelled in ceramics and was internationally recognised in this field.
Her works can be found in Polish museums in Warsaw, Gdańsk, Wrocław, Szczecin, Słupsk, Toruń, Zielona Góra, Olsztyn, Bolesławiec, Wałbrzych, as well as in Faenza (Italy), Vallauris (France), Bechyne (Czech Republic), Jonkoping (Sweden), in the collection of the John Paul II Institute in Rome.
Working with the artist Stanislaw Konieczny she created the ceramic decoration for the Chapel of the Sear People in St Mary’s Basilica in Gdansk. She was particularly interested in themes featuring music, ballet, exotic fauna and marine flora.
