This is a ver rare limited edition paperweight - made by the Caithness glass designer, Allan Scott.
It is annotated with the title and issue details on the faceted base section. This is certainly a much rarer and much sought-after weight. It is from a very small edition of only 90 weights (fully subscribed). This is Number 87. The title is ROYAL BIRTHDAY BOUQUET- and it was a special edition produced to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Queen Mother. The weight was solely for the UK - and never issued in America.
This weight was always an expensive item as it was difficult to make and would have involved a lot of time and skill to have made it - on its original issue, it was retailed by specialist outlets for £250.
It is a very dramatic weight and the designer has thrown everything in his design tool kit at it! I can certainly see why only 90 were made 35 years ago.
It is cylindrical in shape with a clear interior and Royal Blue (how appropriated) overlay. There is a convex polished viewing facet on the top - and around the sides there are two rows of smaller polised circular facets - a grand total of 9. Inside is a delicate bouquet of multi-coloured flowers and three lime green leaves. There is a teeny weeny cane in the central flower - it reads 90. Just when you thought Mr Scott couldnt add any more to this weight - it has an angled edge so you can pop the weight at a jaunty angle to view it. When you do you can see the deeply engraved star in the base - with the rays radiating like a halo around the floral posy.
Gosh! it has it all this one!
It is in excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks, just as when it was made.
Dimensions: Height is 2 1/4 inches. The diameter at the widest point is 3 inches.
