This is an decorative wall plate or charger designed by Ernst Maria Lang. He was a prominent German architect, caricaturist, and cartoonist. Lang was known for his satirical drawings on political and social issues, especially during the Cold War.
This comic plate is just over 10 inches in diameter. The design is a satirical one showing the German actress the Chinese leader Mao Tse Tung - he is holding firmly onto his little red book. A chinese dragon appears above him. Six men with victor's laurel wreaths are positioned on each side of the leader.
Encircling the caricature is the German phrase "Wer sich auf seinem Lorbeer ausruht, trägt ihn am falschen Platz," translating to "If you rest on your laurels, you wear them in the wrong place." Lang uses this image to suggest that one should not become complacent with past successes but should strive for continual achievement.
