This is a beautiful and highly collectable vintage large serving platter that has been made by Royal Copenhagen.
It is a design from the Flora Danica series. These plates were first made towards the end of the 18th century - and the name of the series comes from the fabulous botanical publication which was published between 1761 and 1882 - and features the most fantastic illustrations of Danish flora.
One of the first sets was ordered by King Christian VII as a gift for the Empress Katherina II of Russia. However, she died before the set was completed and it is still in the possession of the Danish Royal Family - and can be seen at the Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen.
The Royal Copenhagen pieces are very fine pieces of porcelain - all the details on them are beautifully modelled & hand-painted. All gilding is applied by hand - with the finest 22-carat gold embellishments on the edges, as shown in my photographs.
Every piece could be considered a work of art in itself - and they have always been considered as amongst the finest and most luxurious of dining services.
Flora Danica is still being produced today using the same methods first used over 200 years ago.
The platter or tray measures 40 x 32 cm. It is in excellent condition with no damages or restorations.
The decoration on the front shows Echinops Sphaerocephalus - or Great Globe Thistles (Arctic Glow). It has a flower head which is a spherical pom-pom made up of tiny, starry-shaped flowers - they are on a stem that can rise to almost one meter in height. The stems are strong and at first glance look like they are a rich brown colour - but they are actually green, and are covered with tiny maroon hairs. The leaves are grey-green with a felted white underside.
My wonderful platter - is a great display piece - and probably for a collector of these special Royal Copenhagen wares.
