This is a little matched pair of dark red glass vases with an iridescent peacock feather sheen or finish.
They are in the Art Nouveau style and I think they are possibly a pair of Loetz vases (Loetz Rubin Matte Iris) or more probably by Poschinger Glass in Germany. Betty Heldrich did similar designs at Poschinger which were decorated with similar enamelled flowers.
They are a fine antique pair and date to around the 1900s.
The vases are handcrafted and hand-blown from dark claret red / purple ground glass with a metallic-bronze iridescent finish (iris) with stunning deep rich amethyst purple highlights, which shades into a glimmering gold and rainbow hues. This technique was known as Rubin Matte Iris or Rubin Metall. These decorative art nouveau pieces are hard to find (especially such a fine-matched pair) and as such, they are very much sought-after items.
They date to the early 20th century - and have pretty hand-painted flowers on the front of each vase with a mirrored composition of a true matching pair. The little flowers are original to the vase and beautifully painted with great attention to detail. There is a pink flower with a pale blue centre in full bloom - it shares a stem with a half-opened flower at the top and two tight buds. There is a green leaf at the bottom of each vase.
The neck of each vase is painted with dull gold-coloured enamel paint - not sure if these might have originally been fitted in the past with a thin silver neck collar - but they came to me with this dull gold enamelled rim on them.
The glass is a dark claret-red colour which looks more like a purple shade with the external finish applied. It is an attractive iridescent finish on the exterior surface - rather like the lustre sheen that you might find on peacock feathers. There is sadly a little area of rubbing to the back of one vase - possibly where it has been picked up and put down over many years.
Each wee vase is 5 1/2 inches in height.
They are in good antique condition - with no chips or cracks - just the rubbing to the back of one - and as mentioned, as well as the possibility of the missing thin silver rims (easily replaced). My price for these is a fair one given the little area of rubbing to the iridescent finish on the back of one. which I have taken into account.
They look just lovely on display and would look quite at home in a fine period Art Nouveau or Jugendstil interior.
