This is a very stylish original Art Deco vase for a period interior - indeed it would look good on the desk in Poirot's apartment.
It is such a beautiful shape. It is made of hand-blown black glass - and is decorated on the outside with its original silvered paintwork. The neck is silvered - and the foot of the vase is also silvered. Silver parallel vertical lines are around the main body section. The top of the foot has its original red colour and more silvering at the extreme edge of the foot. v
The silvering has rubbed slightly over the 90 years - through handling, but it looks just fine - and as expected for a piece dating to the early 1930s. It has no chips or cracks - and no disfiguring scratching to the surface. The rubbing to areas of the silver is commensurate with age - and taken into account with my pricing for this rare piece of Deco French Art Glass.
It is not signed - but I have seen similar vases of this shape and other silvered black glass ones in different Deco designs that are signed by HEM. I assume my one is also by this maker. HEM - is the mark used by the French designer, Michel Herman. They were based at 12, Rue Martel in Paris in the 1930s.
Dimensions: The height is 10 3/4 inches. The rim has a diameter 3 3/8 inches. The width at the widest point is 3 1/2. The foot has a diameter of 3 3/8 inches - so the base and neck of the vase and perfectly in proportion.
