I am thinning out some things from my own collection that have been packed away for some years now. I was going through some boxes and came across this pretty vintage Portuguese jug.
It is all hand-painted with enamels - all baked onto the glass and quite permanent (if you wash and clean with care!). I have never used it and used to just have it on display as I loved the scene printed on it. I love Lisbon.. and been there a number of times.
This jug is easy to date has there are the artist's initials painted near the foot: J.B and the date 1959. It is also entitled LISBOA. All the cute paintwork is on the outside of the jug - so if you do wish to use it - any liquids inside will not have a determental effect on the painting.
It is a large jug with a thick and solid handle firm applied to the main body of the jug. The jug is 7 1/4 inches in height. The main body is about 6 inches at the widest and from handle to spout is 7 1/4 inches. The base is 4 1/2 inches.
The jug has been hand-blown and there is a large ground pontil mark on the base.
I love the painting around the outside of the jug. It is rather naive in style and is slightly caricature and comic - that is part of its charm! There are tall white houses with orange roofs. Fluffy white clouds are in the sky. Two women carry produce to the market - one has a large tray balanced on her head. The image is repeated on each side of the jug. On the front are more white buildings and a tall spindly tree with green leaves. Two men are shown carrying baskets.
There is a blue enamel band down the handle and around the rim of the jug. It has a nice pouring spout. It has no chips or cracks. There is no clouding to the glass inside. All the paintwork is in good condition with vibrant and lively colours and no rubbing to the decoration.
This is a special piece to me - and I have never seen another quite like it. It is now 67 years old - many of these artisan pieces just dont survive! This is reflected in my asking price. I have taken lots of images for your inspection.
