This is a very strange 1940s German print. It is entitled "Zwei Figuren" or "Two Figures".
It is an original lithograph by Mac (Max) Zimmermann and is pencil signed and dated 1946.
Zimmermann was a painter, graphic artist and one of the most important Surrealist artists of the post-war era. He was born in Wasserburg and moved to Hamburg in 1934 where he worked as an illustrator, stage designer and art instructor. He moved to Berlin in 1938 and exhibited his first paintings there in 1940.
The National Socialist Dictatorship and WWII put a temporary halt on Zimmermann’s artistic endeavours and it was not until 1946 (the date of my print) that he began to exhibit again in Berlin. In 1948 his prints and paintings were included in the Venice Biennale. His prints and paintings have been exhibited internationally since the 1950s and many are now in prestigious institutions and collections worldwide.
The lithograph is pencil signed, lower right. It is dated 1946. It is in very good condition with no issues. It shows two entwined figures. They are drawn in the typically strange spindly form that Zimmermann gives to human forms appearing in his work.
The print has been re-framed with a new window mount and simple black frame. The frame measures 34.5 x 26.5 cm. The image is 22.3 x 16.2 cm.
