This is a delightful little Delhi School Indian miniature painting on ivory. It shows an image of the Diwan-i-Khas at the Red Fort. The building is also known as the Hall of Private Audiences and was a chamber in the Red Fort of Delhi. It was a reception hall with the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan received courtiers and state guests. It was also known as the Shah Mahal.
My little miniature is painted an oval shape and is glazed and the glass is held in place by a silver plate thin band. It is contained in an exquisitely carved ebony cabinet frame. The frame is decorated all over the front with entwined floral decorations - the back is plain with a metal easel strut stand to prop up the frame when the painting is on display. It probably dates to around the second half of the 19th century. These little paintings were very popular with Europeans visiting India or returning after service there from the mid-century onwards.
The frame measures: 11 x 9 cm. The little oval miniature is 4 x 5 cm.
Both the painting and frame are in excellent condition. The colours on the painting are still fresh and the frame and glass are without issues.
It is one of two little Indian miniatures in my store - I have photographed the two here side by side. These little antique Anglo-Indian works are much sought after.
