This is a rare item - a fine vintage enamel and copper brooch that was made by the Scottish artist, John Leman
It dates to the late 1960s or early 1970s - and looks to earlier Celtic designs for inspiration.
This is a typical piece of enamelware by Leman - and it is a copper pendant that has a beautiful knotwork Celtic Revival pattern on the front - with copper tones and dark blue enamel background. The pattern on the brooch looks like a little amorphic dragon. Leman liked to use this motif on his jewellery.
It is signed on the reverse, as photographed.
Dimensions: The height is 6 cm and the width is 3 cm
John Leman appears to have worked in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, in the 1970s. He made a variety of decorative items - all decorated with jewel-like enamels.
These hard-to-find enamel pieces are highly collectible and now quite hard to source - works by Leman are of great interest to collectors of 20th-century Scottish outsider design. These enamel wares are now about 50 years old.
