This is a beautiful Victorian brooch dating to around the 1880s.
It is a beautiful LARGE example.
It is a round shape with a Maltese Cross shape in the center. The cross is made of coloured Scottish agates set in silver - and the background has been cut away to that you can see through this area.
The brooch is inset with a selection of Scottish agates and some Montrose agates - these form the petals of an abstract flowerhead with the spaces behind filled with more triangular-shaped pieces.
All the stones are intact with no damage - and are held in place by silver edging. The whole of the back is covered in a layer of this sterling silver - as you find on antique Scottish pieces.
The pin is as you would find on antique Scottish jewellery - with a simple c-curl clasp. The brooch also has a little closed hook section on the top at the back - with an attached silver safety chain to pin on your clothing - so that it was going to be double secure.
This is a nice large Scottish brooch: it has a diameter of 5 cm (2 inches) - this is a much bigger than usual type of agate brooch.
I have taken close-up photographs - so please examine these closely to check the condition.
It is unmarked with a hallmark - which is not to worry about, as many of these old Scottish pieces are not given a hallmark etc - The backing and settings for the stones are silver - and sold as such.
It is nice and clean. It is a nice and very attractive example - with 4 different coloured agate stones.
