This is a fine vintage solid silver quaich or twin handled drinking bowl.

It dates from the 1930s and it has a paired down minimalistic Art Deco style.

It is hallmarked for Birmingham 1936 and with the maker's mark for William Neale & Son. They were based at Warstone Lane, Birmingham; and then subsequently at Cox Street, St Paul's, Birmingham. They are best-known for the production of flasks, goblets, sauce boats, vesta cases, quaich, and other such fancy items.

The quaich comes in its original retail box - with the retailer Jamieson & Carrie, Goldsmiths, Aberdeen stamped in black on the white silk on the lid.

The quaich sits snuggly on the black velvet base - and there is a spoon inside - the spoon is not original to the box - but it looks the part and is made of hallmarked silver. There is an impression of the outline of the spoon in the black velvet - so it has been in the box for quite a long period.

Jamieson & Carry is an independent, family-owned jeweller, established in 1733 in Aberdeen, Scotland. The company are still operating and today retail top quality jewellery, fine Swiss watches and luxury gifts. They are still based at Union Street in Aberdeen where they have been located since 1925. They also have had their name engraved on the base of the quaich - as the retailer (in tiny script).

So - without a doubt, this is a lovely, top quality quaich. It is a relatively large one - and it has probably presented as a gift - it is inscribed on the side "Ann".

Dimensions: from handle to handle is 7 inches. The diameter of the quaich is 5 inches. Height is 2 1/4 inches. The weight of the quaich is 155 grams.

I hope that my photographs do this piece justice - I have taken more images - which are available on request to seriously interested buyers.
