These early 20th century pieces designed by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) are always much sought after. This is an attractive bomb or torpedo shaped vase which were sold at Liberty & Co. It is marked on the bottom of one of the base of one of the three fins with the Model number: 0226. It is also marked 2 ENGLISH PEWTER, as photographed. This piece would have been originally designed by Knox and made in Birmingham by W.H. Haseler.
It is made of a darker dull pewter with a patina of age. It has not been polished. It dates to around 1910 and is in good condition for its age. It has no nasty dents and no breaks to the metal. It looks good on display.
The bottom of the torpedo shape would more normally be embossed with stylised floral decoration - this one has no decoration on it - which makes it a little rarer. In all other respects - it follows the form of my other floral one that I have listed in my store.
I also have another one of Knox's bomb vases in my online shop. This one is the same shape - but does not have the embossed floral decoration on it - the body section is plain with a slightly planished textured finish. It is also more of a brighter silver colour. I have included photos of both vases on display together.
It measures: 7 1/4 inches in height. From foot fin to fin it is 4 1/2 inches. The rim has a diameter of 3 inches (1/4 inch wider than my floral one).
