This is a rather rare old plate based on events relating to the pursuits of the Goddess Diana.

I have been unable to trace another quite like it - the image that it is based on would probably be a much larger and earlier prototype - perhaps a Renaissance centerpiece. There is an impressed word on the back - which I think reads COP IE (as photographed).

It is well made with crips detailing to the images on the front of the plate.

The central medallion shows the Goddess Diana with a bow and arrow in her hand - and hounds to her right - to her left we see a stag (which I presume relates to Actaeon who was caught peeping on Diana when she was bathing in a spring in the forest). The central section is in a dipped area of the plate. Surrounding the central design is a raised rim with raised images of a hunt in progress. Diana's hounds are shown chasing a variety of wild animals, including a lion, goat, boar, and of course the stag.

All details are nice and crisp with a fine gold-bronze finish. The plate is certainly very finely made - with well-defined details to the scenes portrayed.

It was made to be displayed on the wall - as there is a little raised ring to the top on the back where you would attach a fine ribbon or string for hanging - that is built into the main body of the plate (as photographed).

It looks very similar in style and indeed mythological subject as my Elkington's inkwell which is also listed in my Iconic Edinburgh online store. So although it is not dated - I am suggesting a provisional dating of the second half of the 19th century for my dish. As mentioned, a rather rare item - and despite a long search have been unable to find anything similar to it.

The plate is 7 1/2 inches in diameter (19cm). It is a heavy piece and is 800 grams unpacked.
