This is another lovely piece of vintage Norwegian metalwork that I have for sale in my shop.
These miniature tankards are designed perhaps as a wee shot or toast glasses for a strong liqueur or spirit.
These little glasses are probably more for the specialist collector of 1970s Norwegian Brutalist design. These are rare survivors and here we have a set of six blue-green glass tumblers (made by Hadeland glass) and contained in handcrafted pewter holders.
The set is of brutalist form - and the pattern is called Rock - with the texture applied to the metal fittings. The pewter holders were designed by Willy Johansson (1921 - 1993) in the late 1960s - and each one was made with a lost wax casting method - at Riddertinn Q. Rudd.
Johansson was a designer at Hadeland Glassverk, Norway from 1947 and 1988. He was responsible for a revival in the making of unique Norwegian art glass. He won numerous international awards for his designs and his work is represented in design museums around the world, such as the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.
Each glass can be removed for washing from its holder. The glasses have almost the same textured surface as the pewter holders. They are each hand-blown and have a polished pontil mark on the base, as photographed.
Dimensions: each wee glass is 2 1/2 inches (6 cm)in height and with a diameter of about 2 inches (5 cm).
Each holder is marked: IDDERTINN Q.RUUD HANDARBEID and with the date 1974. All are in excellent condition with no damage.
My price reflects the rarity and quality of these little glasses.
You do not find complete sets of six Rock glasses that often.
